During the course of , Morrison gradually became part of the group, with John Densmore -- a drummer for the Psychedelic Rangers who was an acquaintance of Manzarek 's -- joining the band that summer.
Between the two departures came the arrival of Robby Krieger , a guitarist who played with Densmore in the Psychedelic Rangers. The band never replaced Hansen. Manzarek decided to play bass via the Fender Rhodes Piano Bass, which had just hit the market. In the first months of , the group worked out the kinks in their chemistry and material while at that venue, so when they started playing the Whisky A Go Go that summer, they had found their voice.
Rothchild , witnessed two sets from the Doors on August 10, Just over a week later, the band signed to Elektra, which also was home to Love. Within the next seven days, the Doors were fired from the Whisky thanks to Morrison 's on-stage profanity during "The End" and they headed into Sunset Sound to record their debut.
The Doors headed to stores during the first week of The band immediately supported the album through local television performances and the release of "Break on Through," which failed to garner much attention nationally. Over the course of the summer of , "Light My Fire" climbed its way to number one on the Billboard Hot , an ascent punctuated by an appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show where Morrison sang "girl we couldn't get much higher" -- in defiance of the request of a tamer lyric on the part of the show's producers -- turning the Doors into stars in the process.
By the time "Light My Fire" ended its run on the charts, the Doors had their second album, Strange Days , ready to go. Strange Days was knocked out quickly, constructed largely of songs the Doors had been kicking around for a while. The record performed like an aftershock on the charts: it went to number three, thanks largely to its first single "People Are Strange," which just missed the Top 10, peaking at As its second single, "Love Me Two Times," worked its way to its 25 placement, Morrison had his first skirmish with the law.
During a concert at New Haven Arena in Connecticut on December 9, , Morrison provoked the police through a number of verbal jabs and the men in blue responded by hauling him off to jail on charges of public obscenity, indecency, and inciting a riot. The arrest had no immediate effect on the Doors' popularity, which grew during as the group played bigger concerts, which were sometimes plagued by skirmishes between audiences and the police. Waiting for the Sun , their third album, consolidated this popularity, reaching number one on the strength of its number one single "Hello, I Love You," but the sessions with producer Rothchild were difficult.
After Morrison's death in , the remaining members continued as a trio until finally disbanding in Although The Doors' active career ended in , their popularity has persisted.
According to the RIAA, they have sold over However, he continued to be plagued by drugs and depression. On July 3, , Courson found Morrison dead in the bathtub of their apartment, apparently of heart failure. Since the French officials found no evidence of foul play, no autopsy was performed, which has in turn led to endless speculation and conspiracy theorizing about his death.
In , a Paris club owner named Sam Bernett published a book claiming that Morrison died of a heroin overdose at his nightclub and was later carried back to his apartment and placed in the bathtub to cover up the real reason for his death. Jim Morrison was buried at the famous Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, and his grave has since become one of the city's top tourist destinations.

He wrote a book about the case, published in , and donated the profits to the Occupy movement. I guess he was taking painkillers and brown powder, too. I mean, it sounds horrible, but at least you rode the train all the way to the end — you never checked out early.
